Studio 4 : Peter Wood
oil, acrylic

“I am not a "book of the month" artist and I do not paint pretty pictures”. - Marsden Hartley (1877-1943)

Peter Wood has been an artist and painter for more than 10 years, working with traditional and non-traditional materials: oil paint, turpentine, linseed oil, dammar varnish, interior latex paint, random generators, and canvas.

Wood studied with Gerald Ferguson (1937-2009) at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (1996-2000) and now lives and works in western Quebec. His academic credentials include a BAH in Philosophy (Queen's University, 1993), a BAH in Fine Arts in studio Painting (1999) as well as a BAH in Communication design (2000) both from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Wood trained as a designer with Gotschalk+Ash, Montreal (1999) and has strong analytical skills from significant experience (10 years) in communication design.

Wood has been represented by several galleries including The Jo Beal gallery in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, and the Sandra Goldie Gallery in Montreal. In 2007 he opened his own art space: The Waterline Gallery, with an attached studio in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.

Wood investigates issues of authorship, philosophy of history, and semiotics. Using random generators, text and paint, he considers issues of identity. Wood is informed by the rural landscapes where he lives. He values the 19th century concept, the myth of rural life as highlighted in Gustave Corbet’s The Stone Breakers. Wood has built tree houses, traditional wood fired bread ovens, made superlative sour dough bread, painted local landscapes and regional architecture. “I like shadow and light and things that are not easily seen. I like reflections and rhythm.” notes Wood.

Peter Wood has exhibited work at Impressions Gallery, Shawville, the Stone School Gallery, Portage du Fort, and the Alliance de Française in Ottawa as well as having work in private ownership across North America, England, and Germany.
